FAQ Royall Wood Pellet Grill/Smokers

Where is the Royall™ wood pellet grill made

Our grill is proudly manufactured here in the U.S.A. and always will.

What is a Royall™ wood pellet grill

A wood pellet grill is a barbeque that uses wood pellets instead of gas or charcoal as a source of fuel.

Does the Royall™ wood pellet grill use gas or charcoal

No, the Royall™ uses all natural compressed wood pellets as its fuel source.

Why is a Royall™ wood pellet grill better then gas or charcoal

With wood pellets, you get the convenience of gas and a true smoke flavor

What are the wood pellets made of?

In our wood pellets, we use only 100% natural hardwoods. There are absolutely no oils, fillers or binders in our food grade wood pellets.

Can I use stove pellets in a wood pellet grill

Please do not use wood pellets from your stove to cook with. The wood pellets in your stove may contain additives, that when burned, are harmful to you.

Can you mix fuels in a wood pellet grill

No you cannot. Only use food grade pellets in a wood pellet grill

What are some of the benefits to using food grade wood pellets?

Wood pellets burn more efficient then charcoal. Wood pellets are better on the environment then natural gas, propane, or charcoal. A wood pellet grill is physically safer for you as well if a wood pellet grill gets knocked over causing it to smolder out due to the air and fuel ratio not being correct. It takes a 30 to 1 air to fuel ratio to burn wood pellets

Does the Royall™ wood pellet grill use electricity

Yes it uses electricity. The wood pellet grill uses 2.55 amps to run during peak performance with the hot rod on. Turning a Royall™ wood pellet grill on would be about the same wattage as a 40 - 50 watt light bulb.

Can I mix flavors of wood pellets?

Yes, you can mix any flavors you like as long as they are food grade wood pellets

How efficient is a Royall™ wood pellet grill

A wood pellet grill burns at a 98% to 99% efficiency rating

How long does the wood pellets last

The wood pellets in a wood pellet grill will last anywhere from 8-40 hours. This information is based on the size of the hopper that your Royall™ wood pellet grill has and the amount of fuel that is able to be consumed on the high setting of the analog control, which is maximum 2.35 lbs per hour.

On the high setting or 450 degrees you will get from 8- 12 hours On the medium setting or 280 degrees to 325 degrees you will get between 18 and 21 hours On smoke or 160 degree to 225degrees you will get 36-42 hours. The fluctuation on usage depends on a couple of things

1) the ambient temperature outside

2) the wind

3) the type of wood pellet being used

4) the altitude

5) the moisture or humidity outside but

How does a Royall™ wood pellet grill work

Royall™ wood pellet grills work by a drive motor that drives the wood pellets in across the fire pot where a heating element lights up for 3-5 min once the element gives the ember it shuts down and the induction fan blows on the pellets like a forge that a blacksmith uses then the baffle goes over the fire and creates a vortex once the drip pan is on it completes a full convection flow

CAUTION: Locate your new grill such that all surfaces are at least 12" from any combustible material. Also consider winds and proximity to windows so that exhaust is not directly entering your home.

EACH TIME YOU START YOUR GRILL:

CHECK PELLET HOPPER TO ENSURE PELLETS ARE DRY AND READY TO USE. (Wet pellets can swell and damage the auger or shear the pin)

Apply a new foil to the spatter plate for easy clean up.

Check for and remove any excessive drippings build up to avoid flare ups and fires.

If the auger has been previously charged as described above, you should be able to turn the power switch on with the cook setting on Medium to ignite the pellets. Smoke should appear with in 2 minutes. It’s usually good to leave the grill run for 10 minutes prior to adjusting the control or adding food.

Always leave lid open until pellets are ignited.

COOKING MODE SELECTION: Note – always cook with lid closed

HIGH MODE: Allows the auger to run continuously and creates temperatures of 400 to 500 degrees depending on outside temperature. Allow grill to run at least 15 minutes to obtain this temperature. This setting is normally used for short cooking times of select meats and searing meat surfaces.

MEDIUM MODE: ALLOWS AUGER TO STOP AND START IN 2 MINUTE INTERVALS. Temperature will vary depending type of pellets and outside air temperature (250 to 350). This mode is normally used following HIGH MODE searing of meat or for slightly longer cooking times that promote more smoke flavoring.

LOW / SMOKE MODE: ALLOWS auger to run and stop at a 1 : 3 ratio. (160 to 225) This MODE is normally selected for longer cooking times of larger cuts of meats. This tends to promote smoke flavoring and tender servings. It may also be used to keep faster cooked items warm for a period of time.

GRILL MAINTENANCE

Wipe cool grill exterior down with warm soapy water just as you would any interior cooking appliance. High quality car wax can be applied a couple of times a year to maintain the finish.

Monitor grease build up on the grill interior and drip rail and remove when any surfaces builds up exceeding 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch to avoid grease fires.

Before lighting the grill, occasionally check ash build up in and around the fire pot. Excessive ash can get distributed to food and can reduce the efficiency of the fire pot. To remove ash, use a shop vacuum on dry ash and brush with soapy water where grease has helped to stick it to the surface.

Cover the grill with a water proof cover when not in use. Or store under roof. Controls should not be exposed to the elements for long periods

What are the Btu ratings?

The BTU ratings of a Royall™ wood pellet grill will range anywhere from 20k - 32k Btu’s.

What is the temperature range of the Royall™ wood pellet grill

The temperature range of a Royall™ wood pellet grill is anywhere from 160- 475 degrees

Can you run the Royall™ off a generator or inverter

Yes you can run it off a generator or a 400 watt inverter

What is the shelf life of wood pellets?

As long as there is no moisture, your wood pellets do not break down

My Royall™ wood pellet grill will not light

Is your Royall™ grill plugged into an outlet with a ground fault Interrupter (GFI)? Check that there is power, by plugging in a lamp or power tool of some kind. After you have confirmed that you have power, turn the grill on. Can you hear the fan running or see the auger turning in the fire pot? If so your "Hot Rod" may have gone out. If the fan and auger are not working, check the fuse on the back of the control board.

Important: UNPLUG your Royall™ grill from the electrical outlet! Then, unscrew the control board and check the fuse to see if it’s blown. There is a spare fuse there also. If the fuse is still good, you can check the control board. By switching the color coded plugs you can determine if the control board is bad, or if it is the hot rod.

Here’s how:

First disconnect the Royall™ grills from the power outlet.

Remove the two screws on the control switch, and gently pull the control unit and wires out of the hopper base. You may need to cut some of the cables free by cutting the wire ties lose. (DO NOT CUT THE CABLES)

Switch the purple and orange plugs by unplugging them. Then, plug the purple connector into the orange connector.

Now, plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet and turn on the grill. If the induction fan operates, you will need a new hot rod. If not, you will need a new control board. Unplug the purple from the orange connector and reconnect to their correct color connector.

Pellets are not getting into my firepot

First check to see if the auger is turning. Check that you have pellets in the hopper and that nothing is blocking the hole that feeds the auger. You can see and hear the auger in the hopper or firepot. If your Royall™ wood pellet grill has never been used, it will take some time for the auger tube to fill up.

Did you run the hopper dry while grilling?

Because everything is hot it is easiest to just fill the hopper and run the light cycle twice.

This is usually enough to back into the smoke.

Just set your switch to "Smoke" and then turn the grill off and back on again. Wait three minutes and repeat the cycle again. If you determined that you have pellets and power you may need to check the motor that drives the auger and control board.

Here’s how:

First disconnect the grill from the power outlet.

Remove the two screws on the control switch, and gently pull the control unit and wires out of the hopper base. You may need to cut some of the cables free by cutting the wire ties lose. (DO NOT CUT THE CABLES)

Unplug the orange and red connectors, hooking the red connector up to the orange connector.

The problem is the control board if the auger motor works with the orange hooked up to the red. The control board will need to be replaced.

Call tech support.

If the auger motor doesn’t work, but the fan still does, the auger system is the problem.

If this happens, check the following:

If there are decomposed or wet pellets you’ll need a shop vacuum to remove the pellets from the hopper, fire pot and auger tube. After the firepot is completely cooled, place the vacuum hose to the end of the auger tube to remove any remaining pellets. Making sure the red connector is still attached to the orange connector, turn on the grill and check the two inch propeller on the motor.

The propeller turns and then stops

Turn the grill off and see if the propeller unwinds. If it does, there is a jam in the auger system. The auger will need to be removed and the auger tube thoroughly cleaned.

The same thing will be needed for the pellet hopper.

If the propeller will not turn, first turn off the power switch. The auger motor will unwind when the grill is turned off, indicating the auger motor is bad and needs to be replaced.

Call tech support.

My Unit goes out on "Smoke"

Open the lid and remove cooking grill, drip pan and U-shaped firepot cover. Check for a large amount of pellet ash in and around the firepot. If so, it will need to be removed. Make sure the grill is completely cold. Return firepot cover, drip pan and cooking grill. Start the smoking and cooking again.
