Maverick Instant Read & Wireless BBQ Thermometers

Maverick Instant Read & Wireless BBQ Thermometers

Hey Friends, I want to share with you my thoughts on Maverick’s Instant Read & Wireless BBQ Thermometers. I have only had these a few days and only done one large piece of meat with the Barbecue Set. But, here is what I have learned.

I have been going around sticking my Instant Read Thermometer in anything I could find to check the temp reading. Hot or Cold, I didn’t care, including Patti’s hot tea. Now, I have fired up the BBQ a few times and have put it to the test there also.

My finding: the Maverick Instant Read Thermometer is “Spot On”. I have used it at home, and my cooks at Craft Brewery and the Farmer’s Markets where we cook. It takes all the guess work out of my cooking and helps get it just right. Hugely important.

The Features:

  1. First and most important is that it is certified accurate with a Certificate of Calibration.  It has the date, serial number and test instrument number with the reading. This tells me that my temps are good and I am not in any danger of making anyone sick by under cooking.
  2. It is very fast
  3. Large backlight LCD readout, necessary because we frequently cook at night
  4. Water Resistant
  5. Shock Proof
  6. Reads in either Celsius or Fahrenheit
  7. Fits easily in the pocket of our chef’s coats and so we look spiffy and professional
  8. It even comes with 2 AAA batteries, so you don’t have to go get some before you can use it.

I have only had the opportunity to use this once so far. Patti has already gotten me another big piece of meat for the grill. I really like the idea behind the BBQ Thermometers, but have had “a bad taste in my mouth” from a few others that we have tried. The problem I have had was the leads would melt where they come through the BBQ lid. To be fair though, I don’t know if it is due to my grill design or cheap leads. The Maverick leads are a wire weave that can take the heat up to 716 degrees F. So, I won’t be ordering replacements leads anymore. (I threw the two other units I had in the trash.)

Besides, having a wireless remote receiver on this set has another feature I really like. Which is a second probe the monitors your BBQ grate temperature. This allows me see what my grill grate is doing and helps identify any hot spots on my grill. We cook on Royall Wood Pellet Grill/Smokers and my grill and I are very close, but it is fun to see readout of what you “Think” you already  know.

The Features:

 Receiver

  1. I can monitor both the grill and meat temperature as far as 300 feet away
  2. The wireless receiver with LCD  beeps and flashes when the meat goes above your programmed temp
  3. The wireless receiver with LCD both beeps and flashes when the barbecue goes above your programmed temp
  4. The Timer can count both up or down
  5. LCD on the receiver has a back light for night use
  6. There is a “lost link alert” if you lose signal
  7. Has a belt clip and a built in stand
  8. Again, comes with batteries

Transmitter

  1. Has a removable wire stand that also works as a hanger
  2. Food probe can be inserted 6 inches into the meat for a true reading
  3. Both probe wires are heat resistant up to 716 degrees F.
  4. Can be used both in the oven and the smoker
  5. BBQ probe comes with a clip that easily attaches to your grill grate
  6. Again, comes with batteries

All that said we really like our Maverick Thermometers, have enjoyed using them and look forward to trying to wear them out. I think anyone who grills, bbq’s or smokes would also enjoy these. They would make great gifts that would actually be used instead of being in the all too famous BBQ tool drawer!
